Attendee capabilities – Attendees do not have the ability to upload presentations and/or resources into the webinar space.  If attendees have resources to contribute, they may upload them into the Learning Management System (LMS) ahead of time or share them with a moderator for placement into the webinar space.  Attendees may annotate or mark-up presentations; listen; speak; participate in on-screen public and private messaging; respond to polls, voting, and individual or group questions; raise a hand to ask a question or make a comment; adjust user interface to suit their individual needs.

Moderator & Attendee system/equipment requirements - Desktop or laptop computer with (at least) 2G of memory and a 1Ghz processor (any computer bought in the last four years should be fine).  Attendees may participate via tablet or mobile device.  Moderators should plan to present using a desktop or laptop computer as some elements of the moderator user interface may not be visible on mobile devices to screen size.

For attendees, we recommend minimum 0.5 Mbits/sec (500 Kbits/sec) upstream and at least 1 Mbits/sec download bandwidth.  The upstream bandwidth is the amount of bandwidth your computer has available to transmit data to the BigBlueButton server.  These are not hard and fast numbers, as it depends on the activity of the viewer.  If the viewer is not broadcasting a webcam, the amount of upstream bandwidth used would be less than 0.5 Mbits/sec.

Speed Test

A good way for users to check your bandwidth is to visit speedtest.net.  The results from speedtest.net give the user’s actual bandwidth.  This actual number is important because a user may report that their ISP provides them 0.5 Mbits/sec upstream bandwidth; however, speedtest.net may report an actual number that is much lower.  The difference may be throttling by the Internet Service Provider and background activity on their computer (such as background downloads, file sharing clients, etc).

For presenters, we recommend as much upstream bandwidth as possible.  For example, if the presenter shares their desktop, BigBlueButton’s desktop sharing will attempt to publish their desktop updates as quickly as possible to the server.

Browsers - We recommend Google Chrome (Flash is built-in) or Mozilla FireFox.  You can also use Internet Explorer and Safari, but you’ll get better audio using Chrome and FireFox via WebRTC.

For audio, we strongly recommend students use a headset.  A headset will ensure that others can hear your voice clearly and you don’t cause echo or background noise for others.  Any basic headset with a built-in microphone will suffice.  A laptop with a built-in webcam and microphone will be sufficient as well if you’re in a quiet area.  We recommend presenters use microphones that are suitable for the spaces they are presenting from.  WINGsReality EDU instructors typically use lavalier (wireless lapel) type mics as they are professional quality and do well to isolate background noise and feedback form room audio.  Less elaborate systems may work fine when broadcasting from private or lower occupancy rooms, etc. Please feel free to consult with us on your equipment recommendations.
